Duties

Help
  • Assists with specification development and administration of contracts
  • Serves as contract inspector on contracts and conducts regular inspections to assure compliance with contract specifications.
  • As a ranger with citation authority, regularly patrols and directs the inspection of the lands, waters and parks (by vehicle and boat) on a daily basis implementing our visitor assistance program.
  • Observes, reports, prevents and takes action necessary to resolve incidents of trespassing, encroachments, fire hazards, unsafe actions or conditions, unauthorized uses of lands and waters, and violations of Title 36 Code of Federal Regulations.
  • Observes, compiles and analyzes visitor use data; prepares monthly visitation reports. Responsible for generating data via computer.
  • Implements, directs, and coordinates interpretive activities at visitor centers and interpretive facilities.
  • Responsible for an effective safety program for project visitors and government personnel.
  • Determines the need for and arranges for the provision of all supporting services, equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Provides input for preparation of budget, equipment, upgrading or replacement and staffing changes.
  • Participates in the master planning and development of OMPS by identifying, developing, and compiling resource management data in appropriate format.
  • Participates in a variety of resource management projects including deer surveys, upland game flush counts, fence-line surveys and habitat planting for wildlife in recreation areas.
  • Reviews and comments on applications for leases, licenses, easements and permits.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Required to wear prescribed uniform as identified in regulation, ER 1130-2-550, dated 15 November 1996. Must wear appropriate safety gear and protective clothing as required.
  • Must meet the Park Ranger training requirements as identified in the Career Development Guide for Civil Works Natural Resources Management Team Members.
  • Possession of or the ability to acquire a state driver's license and a Corps of Engineers boat operator's license.
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends depending on the needs of the project to which the employee is assigned.
  • Required to have, or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire, a valid CPR Certificate and First Aid Certificate.
  • Possession of or the ability to acquire Citation Authority within one year of hire.
  • Occasional overnight travel required (approximately 10%) for training, conferences and rotational assignments.
  • Pre-employment physical required.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TOY) or business travel requirement of 25% for official duties/training.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes administering natural resources and/or outdoor recreation programs and enforcement of park rules and regulations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

OR

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education with major study in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
